Your first book, “Leadership Lessons Inspired By a 6 Year Old,” how did you stumble into becoming an author and publishing this book?

Joe McGee

The inspiration for his book came from lessons he learned raising his first-born daughter, Ursula. In 2009, I started a leadership role in my career but at the same time I started raising my daughter and learning how to become a father. Raising my daughter and a team in the workplace had a lot of similarities and these stories really enhanced my experience and wanted to tell my story to other’s. For me just having the blessed gift of having children or not having children seemed to be a challenge. As you will learn in Chapter 43 of my book, I experienced a very dark time in my life where children was almost not in the cards for me.

As far as getting my story out to other’s was contributed to HDI. HDI is a non-profit professional association and certification body for the technical service and support industry. In a recent conference, I was inspired to do more and get my story out to other’s by one of the presenters at the conference. Ever since that conference, I decided to go outside my comfort zone and actually get my work into a publication.

Walk us through the process of writing your first book.

Joe McGee

My first book goes back between the years 2000 and 2016 and most of this was a memory dump. All of my knowledge and techniques over the course of sixteen years came very natural. I was proud to get my work into my first publication for others to read about my experiences.

You talk many times in your book about stepping outside your comfort zone. Why is this important?

Joe McGee

This is not just important – it’s a MUST! I have been applying this simple principle for many years and it’s why I am so success in all that I do. It’s not just important for you but also equally that we push other’s we know outside our comfort zone. Let me give you an example..

My daughter was tasked with a school project. In this project she needed to write a story and read it and present it to the class. When I asked her about this project, I asked her if she was up for the challenge to do something different. We pushed her to do more. We over the course of the weekend had created and published her book for her class. Yes we did this in a matter of two days. The book was started on Friday night and on Amazon by Monday morning. My daughter is only seven years old. The idea was to print and hand out copies of the book to her teacher and class while she read her own book. This is a classic example of why we must keep doing more. Her book is called, “Short Stories,” and is about Trolls, Mermaids, and Fairies.

What’s next for Joe McGee?

Joe McGee

I’m always open for speaking engagements to tell my story and experiences. In 2017, I have many conferences and speaking engagements put into place. Beyond that I’m pleased to announce a new title coming for 2018. I will share further details with you. Stay tuned !
